One night when my son Joe was around two, I could not sleep. A song kept coming into my head, about the "voice in the dark in the next room," when a child wakes up in the night. And just as I was about to give up and turn on the light and write the song down, I heard Joe call Mooooommmmmyyyy! I see it now as an honor, to get both the song and the call.
There’s a Voice in the Dark in the next room
There’s a Voice in the Dark in the next room, pulling me
Voice in the Dark in the next room
Voice in the Dark in the next room, connecting me
I wake up the moment he cries
Almost like I hear him open his eyes
Feet hit the floor and I fly in there
Only thing slowin’ me down is the air
Between me and the child in the next room
The voice in the next room
There’s a thread between us no one sees
Thread between us no one sees, strong as life
There’s a thread between us no one sees
A thread between us no one sees, in the night
He knows he can get whatever he needs
All he’s gotta do is call for me
Coal black eyes look up into mine
Seems for a moment we’ve cheated time
In the dark in the next room
In the dark in the next room
(Breakdown ... )
Voice in the Dark — in the room, in the room
In the next room...
Coal black eyes look up into mine
Seems for a moment we’ve cheated time
In the dark in the next room...
There’s a Voice in the Dark...
